LOOMIS, CA - It has been nearly four years since the Del Oro girls varsity basketball team last lost a league game. Since then, the Lady Eagles have won 39 straight games against league oppenents. However, although the winning streak is on the minds of players and coaches, it's not a first priority. "It's not something that we go into a game plan for," said head coach Mike Takayama.
Takayama has been coaching at his alma mater for 26 years. He spent the first two on the boys' staff and has spent the remaining 24 on the girls'. "Del Oro, as a whole, is just a great place to be and I don't know if I would've been at any school for this period of time," said Takayama.
Takayama's teams have always been competitive and a force to be reckoned with in the section playoffs. Recently, St. Mary's and Sacramento have been thornes in Del Oro's side. For five straight years, Del Oro has lost to either one of those teams in the playoffs.
Members of the team have come to appreciate Takayama's guidance. "He's a very inspirational coach, is super fun, and he teaches us to push ourselves in everything that we do," said senior Bethann Milton. Comedy is something Takayama likes to implement into his coaching techniques. "He knows when to be serious but at the same time, has lots of fun with us," said senior Carly Allred. Takayama has earned the nickname "Coach Taco" among his players.
Other than success for his team, Takayama wants to give quality coaching, similar to the great coaching he received when he was a student. "(I) was a baseball and basketball player here at Del Oro and I had some great coaches ... (I) really felt that this was one way to give back of what I received when I was a player," said Takayama.
